Discovered by Robert H. McNaught (cf. IAUC 8737) as cometary with a faint coma of diameter 20" (mag 17.3) on CCD images obtained in moonlight on 2006 Aug. 7.5 UT with the 0.5-m Uppsala Schmidt telescope in the course of the Siding Spring Survey in Australia. The comet was expected to likely reach naked-eye brightness near perihelion in January 2007, but the forward scattering of dust by sunlight when near the sun in January caused it to become a naked-eye daylight comet for several days, after which it moved southward into darker skies visible from the southern hemisphere with a splendid, long tail.
